Bias binding is a type of narrow fabric that is cut on the bias, or diagonal, of the fabric. This type of binding is used to finish the raw edges of fabric, such as along the neckline or armholes of a garment, or along the edge of a quilt. Because bias binding is cut on the diagonal, it has a greater amount of stretch than binding that is cut straight along the grain of the fabric. This stretch allows it to easily conform to curves and contours, making it ideal for finishing edges on cloth items that have curves or angles. Bias binding is typically made from cotton, polyester, or a blend of the two and can be purchased in pre-cut lengths or made from scraps of fabric.
